IWO JIMA FLAG RAISING FILM

I have often heard talk about whether the famous flag raising photo from the Battle of Iwo Jima was the original or a planned re-enactment because of the lack of available camera gear at the original event but the piece of history that it often overlooked is the story of the man who filmed this footage on Feb 23, 1945. His name was William H "Bill" Genaust and as a Sergent in the United States marine Core acted as war journalist via his 16mm camera work. On the day that the Marines captured the island, Genaust was on top of Mount Suribachi and filmed this footage of five Untied States Marines and one Navy Corpsman hoisted the flag. The extremely interesting aspect to this story is that Genaust never lived to know the impact of his captured images as he was killed not 9 days later. Apparently Genaust volunteered to use his camera light to illuminate a darkened cave where Japanese soldiers were hiding and was shot dead leading the Marines into battle. Incredible and a true testament to the bravery of those in war who decide it a worthwhile endeavor to put down the gun and pick up a camera.

FOOTBALL REF WITH OVERENTHUSIASTIC THROWING ARM! I know I shouldn't find stuff like this funny but I do. It's so incredibly stupid but it is flag related (this I love because I am CAR FLAG MAN) and it offers some levity in times of stress. Bring on the stupid!

AMERICAN FLAGS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Now, I admit that most people (probably in the 99.98 percentile) have absolutely no need or desire to paint their fingernails in the style of the American Flag. I get it. I know you almost certainly think I am a moron for even posting this. But it is a flag blog (more specifically a CAR FLAG blog) and I gotta seek out somewhat interesting flag related subject matter and....well, I suppose that today I may have overstepped the boundaries of what could possibly be considered FLAG interesting but heck, it's worth the shot. Maybe this is something you find interesting and want to invest your time and money into perusing. Almost certainly this is not the case but again, finding flag related subject matter can sometimes be little like drilling for oil in a garbage dump. Chances are you aren't going to end up at the end of the day feeling like a winner. Oh well, enjoy regardless! Heck, it's FLAG related!

HUMAN CAR FLAG!

Finally! How many flag videos must one browse to find one that is actually directly about CAR FLAGS? Finding this mofo was simply a fluke but man, oh man am I glad I made the effort. Yeah, it's ultimately a corporate insurance ad but that doesn't mean it isn't worth watching. Just in case you are like me and hate advertising, I cut out the blatant corporate logo at the end!  CAR FLAG MAN likes!

JAMES BOND FLAG SKI JUMP STUNT

Roger Moore is the Bond that I grew up with and I gotta say that 'The Spy Who Loved Me', 'For Your Eyes Only' and 'Octopussy' were classic and almost a good as they get for the pre-Daniel Craig era. 'Moonraker' was garbage, yes, but three outta four aint bad. One of the classic scenes from 1977 'The Spy Who Loved Me' has got to be the ski jump with it's massive freefall and then dramatic Union Jack flag parachute exploding from 007's backpack. Back in the day this was not just a seriously draw dropping stunt but also the sport of base jumping wasn't even a twinkle in anybody's eye. Amazing! Takes me back, makes me feel old, but no regrets as I am CAR FLAG MAN and I love Car Flags and dammit, there is no time to look back! Only time to forge ahead to the CAR FLAG FUTURE...whatever that means! Lol!

Opening Ceremonies Flag Jump

Now, this is simply amazing and...well, kinda dangerous. Jumping out of an airplane is one thing but then unfolding a massive flag as you are descending to earth? Clearly this guy has some serious cajones not to mention enough patriotism to fill the entire state of Arkansas. Me, I'd consider waving a car flag from the planes window seat but this? Well this is seriously crazy but coolio!

FLAG ON THE MOON

Wow, in all of my years as a flag and car flag fanatic it never dawned on me that at this very moment there is an american flag planted on the surface of the moon. I mean, I KNEW but it just wasn't part of my daily thinking. But ponder this for a moment: 250,000 miles away there is a flag made of standard fabric sitting in a airless, weightless void. This has got to be the most impressive yet most overlooked and forgotten flag in the history of mankind, me thinks. Next thing NASA needs to do is attach a car flag to the shuttle, park it on Mars, setup a webcam, and then I'll spend my remaining days looking for alien lifeforms entering the screen. Imagine if car flags ended up being the intergalactic intermediary between human and alien? Woah!

WHO? WHO CARES? IT'S ABOUT FLAGS SO I AM CONTENT!

Yes, I am a flag fanatic and yes I will pretty much love anything flag related but sometimes you simply find a little flag related gem that makes life a tad better. Case in point,  'WAVING FLAG' by DAVID BISBAL & KNAAN. No, I don't know who they are either and neither make mention of car flags but heck to the moon everybody, this flag song is catchy as all hell...

FLAGS AS A WEAPON!

I always knew that flags were a powerful weapon against nationalistic and team related apathy but I never though of flags as a true physical weapon until I saw this video.  Mind you, the flag in question is certainly a big mofo that most don't have any business wielding but still...what an image! If only I could find a car flag video in which one wields it as such a weapon....that would be priceless. Send it to me if you have access!

Hey, hey. It's amazing what flag related gems you can find when surfing the web. Yesterday, it was Eddie Izzard, comedian extraordinaire (damn, why won't spell check let me fix that?) and today it is the one and only Robin Williams doing an amazing tribute to the American Flag. Again, all I ask is for some car flag related stand-up comedy but heck, it's just a sub genre that I can't imagine it (yet) storming popular culture. I guess that makes me underground! Lol!

EDDIE IZZARD ON FLAGS

Eddie Izzard, the brilliant British comedian speaks upon my favorite topic...well, perhaps my second favorite topic. Naturally, I am more inclined toward car flag related stand-up comedy but unfortunately, to present day, nobody has thus far filled the gaping void that is car flag ha-ha....

THE HUMAN FLAG!

Oh, it's such a joy to type in 'flag' in the search engine of Youtube and then to search via most views. It's amazing what one can come up with and wouldn't you guess it, Dominic Lacasse (the human flag) doing his thing on Guinness World Records TV has almost 5 million hits! Again, that's 5 MILLION. Wow! Now, in my books anybody able to bring 5 milllion people together in solidarity over flags is the man! Yes, I realize that he's just referred to as 'the human flag' but that's not the point. Point is, brother is on the right team and for that, CAR FLAG MAN salutes the HUMAN FLAG. We are obviously cut from the same cloth...that being 100% polyester of course, lol!

A REAL CAR FLAG MAN!

Yes, I admit, I refer to myself as CAR FLAG MAN and tend to make a big deal of my knowledge in all things car flag related but I cannot hold a candle to this guy in term of truly being billed as THE car flag man. This guy is epic...and probably a little deaf by now:)

WHAT THE HECK IS A CAR FLAG?

OK, fair enough question. I guess. Truth be told, CAR FLAGS are my life and thusly I find it astounding to think that anybody hath not a clue what said wondrous object is. But for those who have just stepped out of a time machine then let me explain. CAR FLAGS are flags (duh) that are made from strong polyester material and are usually attached to a car with a polypropylene pole (that's like mad strong plastic) that fits to the car window with a clip. I know, it's hard to envisage so here is a photo or two to help the process...
